"Identity leadership is not about being what others want you to be. It's about being yourself, and choosing to lead by example." ~ Stedman Graham

Welcome to the Mind Your Business Mentor Podcast, where we share strategies, insights, and inspiring stories to help you grow your business and succeed as an entrepreneur. I'm your host, Stephanie Arkadie. In today's episode, we'll be talking about Identity Leadership, a concept that involves leading yourself and others to success by understanding and embracing your unique identity.

Have you ever sat in an audience to hear a presentation and felt like the speaker got a hold of your notes, that is exactly how I felt when I heard Stedman Graham speak on Identity Leadership. He made a strong point about losing your identity when you date someone famous, which he did, Oprah Winfrey. I could only imagine how that affected him and that he’d be speaking from experience and from the heart. Stedman's speech on Identity Leadership focuses on the idea that every individual has a unique identity and that by embracing and developing their individuality, they can become effective leaders in their personal and professional lives. He stresses the importance of developing a personal philosophy, setting specific goals, and taking action to achieve them. Graham also emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and encourages individuals to examine their values, beliefs, and passions to identify their unique strengths and talents. Ultimately, he believes that by becoming an Identity Leader, individuals can create positive change in their communities and the world at large.

He puts it in different words but our belief is the same, that is if You decide to mind your business, becoming self-aware, discover your values, talents, and true identity, develop a vision for your life based on who you are and what you want, then you deliver through the pursuit of your goals, taking the action steps and committing to your daily habits, you will dominate self-mastery which is leading yourself and enabling you to lead others effectively and authentically.

Identity Leadership is based on the idea that a strong sense of identity can be a powerful force for personal and professional growth. By understanding who we are, what we stand for, and what we want to achieve, we can develop the confidence, resilience, and vision we need to lead ourselves and others to success.

Identity Leadership involves four key elements:

1. Self-awareness

Understanding who we are, our strengths and weaknesses, and how we relate to others.

Here are some resources that can help you become more self-aware:

Mindfulness and Meditation apps such as Headspace and Calm can help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions. I have a gift for one (1) lucky loyal listener, see details below. Thank you for listening!

Personality tests such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Enneagram can help you understand your personality traits and tendencies.

Journaling is a great way to reflect on your thoughts and emotions and gain a deeper understanding of yourself.

Feedback from friends, family, and colleagues can help you see yourself from different perspectives.

Books such as "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle and "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey can help you develop self-awareness and personal growth.

Therapy or Coaching sessions can provide a safe space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and gain insights into yourself.

Remember that self-awareness is an ongoing journey, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Experiment with different resources and find what works best for you.

2. Personal values

Defining what matters most to us and how we want to live our lives. You can do a couple of exercises to identify your values. Brainstorm and make a list of values that are important to you, such as honesty, family, success, independence, respect, or loyalty, then rate them or list them in order of importance. Or you can reflect on times when you have felt most fulfilled, happy, and purposeful, and identify the values that were present in those moments. This can help you identify the values that are most important to you and guide your decision-making in the future. Here is a list of personal values to get you started.

3. Purpose

Identifying our goals and aspirations, and how we can use our unique talents and strengths to achieve them. By taking the time to reflect on our values, interests, passions, and skills, we can gain clarity on our purpose and align our lives with it to make a positive impact in the world.

4. Vision

Creating a clear, compelling picture of what we want to achieve and how we will get there. There are many ways that you can arrive at this vision. Some of those things have been previously mentioned here and in previous episodes. The main thing I want you to remember is your Vision answers the question “WHAT DO YOU WANT”? What do you want for your LIFE? Not what you want as a business, not what you want in your health, not what you want for your romantic relationship….what you want in every area of your life. If your vision doesn’t include every area of your life you will sacrifice something or another. You don’t have to sacrifice to have it ALL! You have to clear your mind of what is right now, what happened last year, or what happened in the last decade. Think big, dream big, and don’t worry about the HOW, that is in a totally different step. We are unique and want something different for different reasons. Make sure your vision comes from you. Not cultural influences or society. Your vision has to be unique to YOU!

Let me share a story of a successful Identity Leader. Meet John, an entrepreneur who started a small online business selling eco-friendly products. John was passionate about sustainability and wanted to make a difference. He used his personal values and a sense of purpose to create a clear vision for his business, and his passion and authenticity attracted a loyal following of customers and employees. By leading with his identity, John created a thriving business that not only made a positive impact on the environment but also provided meaningful work for his team and a sense of purpose for himself.

Identity Leadership is a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. By understanding and embracing our unique identities, we can lead ourselves and others to success. Remember, your identity is your greatest asset, and when you lead with it, anything is possible.

Take some time to reflect on your own identity as a leader. Ask yourself: Who am I? What do I stand for? What are my values and aspirations? How can I use my unique talents and strengths to achieve my goals and make a positive impact on the world?
